Contructed originally as a castle built over the tomb of Emperor Hadrian, was later converted to a fortress, for the main purpose of protecting the Popes when they were under threat right from the 6th century. There is a underground passage which links it to the Vatican palaces. The circular Castel Sant' Angelo is today an interesing museum.
